Tararua country views from a e-bike.

Lots of photographers seem to fall into the trap that they have to travel great distances and go to the honey pot destinations to get great imagery. Living in a rural area in the Tararua using the local country roads as a track for the e-bike to keep the fitness up brings on lots of opportunities for capturing classic rural New Zealand scenes as i trundle my way around showing that there is also plenty to photograph just down the road and around the corner. Always have the camera in a back-pack when e-biking and for those interested all images are made using a zoom lens - a Canon 70-300 which may seem unusual instead of a wide angle but have found that nearly all shots are made by selecting just parts of the landscape rather than the big wide view where the subject gets lost in the clutter… well that’s my experience anyways.

Hope ya all enjoy the sample of shots so far. I can see this will be a ongoing project with more blogs to come…

A curious small mob of sheep checking out this photog with a big Canon pointed in their direction. The zoom lens was perfect for isolating them and the trees.

The nearly iconic shed at the entrance to Dannevirke town with the Ruahine Ranges and a lone Cabbage tree for company. Added a rustic feel to the shot to add to the vibe.

At the height of summer it’s very easy to loose sight of your sheep in the paddock as they are the same colour as the grass.

When you get sunflowers planted in a paddock beside the road it would be a sin to not stop and image them…again with a zoom lens.

The gold of the hay bales contrasting with the green crop as well as the tree line and distant hills really stood out with all the contrasts and left the gate in as if you are about to make your way thru.

A classic rural New Zealand scene with a atypical red painted wool shed with yards with Ruahine Ranges in the background and windrowed grass in the foreground adding a layering effect.

The contrast of flowering Aggies on a old decaying stump with the still standing trees in the back ground seemed a great visual counter play.

Cabbage trees grouped together in a paddock

Cabbage trees are a New Zealand icon and the light was striking this group just perfectly so it was a quick stop for the e-bike.and camera out. That’s one thing you can do when you are not rushing thru the landscape by car.
